Our Researchers Among the Finalists of the Pyrkon 2027 Competition

Dr. Włodzimierz Lewoniewski and Izabela Czumałowska have been selected as finalists in the 6th edition of the competition to become a speaker at Pyrkon’s Science Zone. Winning the competition will give them the opportunity to deliver their own presentation at Pyrkon 2027, one of Europe’s largest fantasy and science fiction festivals.

The proposed presentation will focus on the use of knowledge graphs to analyze and visualize information about fictional worlds. It will explore ways of organizing knowledge about fictional universes, their characters, locations, events, and the relationships between them. Using Wikipedia and Wikidata as examples, the presentation will demonstrate methods for constructing knowledge graphs, integrating information from multiple sources, and identifying missing data and inconsistencies.

The presentation will also introduce Map of Speculative Fiction – an interactive map-based visualization featuring approximately 100,000 articles from the Polish and English editions of Wikipedia related to fantasy and science fiction. The project covers a wide range of topics, including literature, films, television series, games, comics, anime, fictional characters, and their creators.

We invite you to watch the competition video, which introduces the topic and main objectives of the proposed presentation:

The winning presentation will be selected through an online public vote. Voting and further details are available on the official Pyrkon website: pyrkon.pl.

Voting is open until November 7, 2026, at 11:59 p.m..
