Data Science at Allegro

An open lecture entitled “Building a Career in Data Science: Advice from the Allegro Team” was held at the Poznań University of Economics and Business, led by Dr. Piotr Kałużny and Anna Cielas. The lecture focused on the practical aspects of working as a Data Scientist in one of the largest purchasing platforms in Central and Eastern Europe.

Data Science is a dynamically developing field that offers a number of professional opportunities in various market sectors. Participating in such a lecture allowed students not only to deepen their theoretical knowledge, but also to understand the realities of work in this industry, which is invaluable in the context of planning their own career path. Understanding the technical and analytical skills required to work as a Data Scientist can help students effectively direct their education and develop these skills. Knowledge of specific tools, programming languages, as well as data analysis techniques is the foundation for effective work in this field.

During the lecture, the speakers shared their experiences and challenges they face every day, including how key soft skills such as presentation and effective communication are important in the work of a data scientist. These skills enable effective collaboration with other company departments, presenting complex analyzes in an understandable way, and building professional relationships, which is essential in today’s work environment. Additionally, during the lecture, issues were raised regarding the processes of implementing models that were previously developed and tested in a controlled environment.

An important point of the lecture was a discussion about building an effective CV and career development in the context of various seniority levels in the organization. A good CV should not only present acquired skills and experience, but also highlight projects and implementations that best reflect the candidate’s potential. In addition, the speakers pointed out how important it is to focus on acquiring practical skills that are valued by employers already at the stage of studies. Understanding how to develop a career within company structures gives students perspective on possible career paths in the future.

The event took place on May 8, 2024 and was organized by SRG Data Science.
